About EGA

The European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) is a global network for permanent archiving and sharing of personally identifiable genetic, phenotypic and clinical data generated for the purposes of biomedical research projects or in the context of research-focused healthcare systems.

EGA only accepts human-derived data that has appropriate consent affiliations, which enable the data to be submitted to the EGA for controlled access. If your data is not human-derived you should consider submitting your data to an alternative archive such as the ENA.

About FEGA

The Federated European Genome-phenome Archive (FEGA) is an infrastructure for transnational discovery and access to sensitive human research data where metadata enabling data discovery is stored in the central portal, but the actual data files remain under strict protection of the national FEGA node and will be archived in a secure repository located in their country of origin. Prior to submission contracts must be signed between the submitter/data owner and the respective national FEGA node in charge of hosting and safekeeping the national archive.

In 2022, the Federated EGA was officially launched with the signature of the first five countries: Finland, Germany, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. With more than 20 additional nodes worldwide preparing to join, the Federated EGA aims to become the largest human omics data sharing initiative towards understanding human health and disease.

Prerequisites for data submission

  1. You need to sign a contract with our national FEGA node in charge of hosting and safekeeping the national archive.
  2. In order to submit data, you have to have an account at EGA test web page .
  3. You need to have role estonia-submitters in the EGA test web page .

Tip

There are two possible data submission solutions:

  1. Until there is no national FEGA node both data and metadata can be submitted to EGA provided it agrees with the national legislation. In this case data submitter requires contract with the central EGA:

  2. Once national FEGA node has bee established only metadata will be shared with central EGA and actual data files are retained in the national repository. This is example contract between data submitter and national node: Norway FEGA node contract example .

Our current documentation concentrates on the latter solution.

Prerequisites for data download

  1. In order to download data, you have to have an account at EGA test web page .
  2. Once you have found a dataset of your interest in the test EGA and you must contact the DAC responsible for access management who will instruct and point you to request controlled data access trough REMS (Resource Entitlement Management System).
