Adding a Virtual Desktop

1. Virtual Desktop Overview

Info

Virtual Desktop service is a cloud-hosted Linux desktop machine. The service is free of charge in beta version. Virtual Desktop (VD) is available in any web browser, and no client installation is required.

What Does it Do

  • It enables you to create a separate working environment for a specific use, such as keeping your personal and work separated in different computing environments.
  • Easy access to your virtual machine that is entirely in your control.

Please note, only the person who made the VD order, can log into the VD. The service is not accessible for any other team members.

2. Ordering The Virtual Desktop Service

  • Step 1: Login to https://minu.etais.ee
  • Step 2: Go to Marketplace
  • Step 3: Choose the project to create the Virtual Desktop in.
  • Step 3: After finding a service Virtual Desktop (Beta), choose the project to create the Virtual Desktop in.
  • Step 5: Fill the field Name and it is recommended to add the description of the resource.
  • Step 4: To finish the order, please, click Create.
    • a) If your role in the Project is Project Manager or System Administrator, please ask your ETAIS Organization Owner to approve the order.
    • b) If your role is Organization Owner you are able to complete the purchase to final approval. Hereafter the system will need a couple of minutes to execute the order (see the order status on screen recording below). Once the system changes the state to Done, your VD is ready to use.
    • c) When the purchase is made by the Project Manager or System Administrator, minu.etais.ee sends a notification to the Owner to review the request. While waiting for the Owner’s approval, the order state remains Pending.

2.1 Organization Owner Approving a Service Order

  • Step 1: On the top right corner of the workspace there is Pending Tasks button. By clicking the button you will activate the Pending confirmations window.
  • Step 2: Choose the service order from the displayed list of orders with their State.
  • Step 3: Click on order with the status Pending.
  • Step 4: Choose the buttons Approve or Reject.
  • Step 5: Hereafter the system will need a couple of minutes to execute the order. Once the system changes the state to Done, your VD is ready to use.

Please note, only the person who ordered the VD, can access the service. If the Owner did not order but just approved it, it is not accessible by the Owner.

2.2 Accessing the Virtual Desktop

  • Access URL https://desktop.hpc.ut.ee/ with MyAccessID Service.
